Turkish woman killed by brother a day after testifying about his violence against her
A Turkish woman named Gülistan Şaylemez has been killed by her brother a day after she testified about his violence against her. Şaylemez had reported her brother Abdullah Şaylemez and her father Abdülvehap Şaylemez to police some 10 days ago, and had testified about them on Feb. 14.

A woman named Gülistan Şaylemez was killed by her brother in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır on Feb. 15, just a day after she testified about him to the police, Mesopotamia Agency reported on Feb. 16.
The 37-year-old Şaylemez had reported her brother Abdullah Şaylemez and her father Abdülvehap Şaylemez to police some 10 days ago, and had testified about them on Feb. 14.
Abdullah Şaylemez shot and killed his sister in the middle of the street a day later, and fled the scene, only to be caught in his residence with the murder weapon.
Gülistan Şaylemez's body has not been claimed from the morgue.
Şaylemez is among numerous women who were killed as a result of law enforcement's reluctance to prosecute men, a bias that has revealed itself time and time again in court rulings.
Hundreds of women are killed by men each year in Turkey, including men they know, with some 23 femicides being recorded only in January, according to the We Will Stop Femicides Platform.
