Ankara Municipality launches donation campaign to distribute meals to senior, low income residents during Ramadan

The Ankara Municipality created a website where any Internet user can donate a traditional meal to someone who needs it during the month of Ramadan. Families of paper collectors, whose operations have been halted, as well as senior persons who are under curfew and low income families will be prioritized, the municipality announced.

The Ankara Municipality is accepting donations to distribute meals to low income persons, seniors under curfew, and families of paper collectors during the month of Ramadan. Hot meals will be distributed for the last meals before fasting and the first meal after a day of fasting.

The website titled "donate an iftar" aims to distribute meals to persons in need for them eat for sahur (the last meal before a fast) and iftar (the first meal after a day of fasting) during Ramadan.

"We are sharing the riches of the blessed month of Ramadan, we are breaking bread together at iftar," Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavaş tweeted April 23, the day before the first day of Ramadan.

Mayor Yavaş from the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) noted that donating a meal could help bring Ankara and the world together during the COVID-19 outbreak that's left many with limited freedoms.

"With 'donate an iftar' you can help persons who don't have anyone to cook for them, who aren't allowed to leave their homes, who are chronically ill, who are disabled or who have low income."

The Ankara Municipality's kitchen will be prioritizing families of paper collectors, whose operations have been halted, as well as senior persons who are under curfew and low income families.

The municipality will charge 15 Turkish Liras (only a few dollars) for a hot meal and its delivery.
