Main suspect released shortly after detention in case of missing Kurdish woman Gülistan Doku

In an investigation concerning the disappearance of Kurdish woman Gülistan Doku, authorities on March 17 detained a key suspect but released him shortly afterwards under judicial control measures. The key suspect, Zaynal Abrakov, was the last person to speak to Doku on the day she went missing on Jan. 5, 2020 in the eastern province of Tunceli.

The police on March 17 detained Zaynal Abarakov in the southern province of Antalya in an investigation concerning the disappearance of 21-year-old university student Gülistan Doku, the state-owned Anadolu News Agency reported.

The authorities took Abarakov's statement and released him just a few hours later under judicial control measures.

Doku went missing on Jan. 5, 2020, and Abrakov, her boyfriend, was the last person to speak to her that day in the eastern province of Tunceli. Tunceli Chief Public Prosecutor's Office continues the investigation into the woman's disappearance.

Abarakov's stepfather is a police officer in the province and had access to the case file of Doku's disappearance.

On Feb. 22, the Doku family had a 20-minute meeting with main opposition leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu in which they told the politician about how they have been victimized in their campaign to find their daughter. They said that the investigation into her disappearance was not complete and that local authorities failed to hold those responsible accountable.
