German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas has cancelled his planned visit to Turkey after Ankara said it was restarting operations of a survey ship that it withdrew last month. Maas said that Ankara's renewed push "severely damaged" the atmosphere of trust and said that Turkey can't have any interest in the long-term continuation of the conflicts that it's involved in.
Turkish actor Birol Ünel, best known for his part in "Head On," died at the age of 59, losing a battle against cancer. Born in southern Turkey in 1961, the actor had migrated to Germany with his family at the age of seven, and received his acting education in Hannover.
Questions linger as COVID-19 tests become mandatory for passengers travelling from Turkey to Germany
All passengers travelling from Turkey to Germany are required to take COVID-19 tests and those who do not submit a negative PCR test result will not be allowed to leave the country. However many questions are still unanswered regarding this new implementation as travelers still do not know where they will be placed under quarantine, who will cover the cost of their accommodation should they stay at a hotel and how their treatment will be actualized in Turkey.
Germany lifted a warning against travelling to four Turkish seaside provinces, Antalya, İzmir, Aydın and Muğla, as part of a deal to help revive tourism between the two countries, the foreign ministry in Berlin said on Aug. 4.
Germany's Foreign Ministry extended travel warnings to 130 countries, including Turkey, as part of COVID-19 precautions. The country determines risky countries based on a rate of 50 infections among 100,000 people.
A Turkish court sentenced German-Turkish journalist Deniz Yücel in absentia on July 16 to jail for 2 years and 9 months for terrorism propaganda, his lawyer said. The court ruled that he was not guilty of sedition or of spreading propaganda for the movement of U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen.
