Turkey's first communist mayor Fatih Mehmet Maçoğlu tested positive for COVID-19, urging all district mayors in the city to self-isolate at home. The mayor of the eastern town of Dersim, Maçoğlu had tested positive on June 22 and was admitted to the local state hospital.
Taxi drivers have lashed out at Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu's plan to add 5,000 more taxi licenses to the market. "Driving taxis is not the municipality’s job,” said the head of the Istanbul Airport Taxi Drivers Cooperative.

Abbas Karakaya writes: While Istanbul's Anatolian-side suburb of Çekmeköy may be adjacent to the city's northern forests, it is among the most lacking in active green areas out of all of Istanbul's 39 districts. Forests and parks in the district are seen as a means of creating tenders and generating wealth. One of the most typical examples of this approach by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP)-led Çekmeköy municipality is the observation point project.
Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has called on the state-owned Vakıfbank to send the money raised as part of a coronavirus aid campaign back to the municipality. Following the government's move banning municipalities from raising funds for low-income families, Vakıfbank had blocked the Istanbul municipality's donation account in which 900,000 Turkish Liras [approximately $136,000] were deposited.
The construction of an Istanbul mosque has begun on a multi-billion liras worth of land in Levent -- the city's prime business district. The construction started after the government transferred the ownership of the land from the Central Bank to the Urbanization Ministry. The construction is being undertaken by a former AKP deputy's company.
